The artificial retina team is led by Prof. Mark Humayun from University of Southern California, academician of United States National Academy of Engineering and Medicine. The core team members include Dr. Qifa Zhou from USC, AIMBE Fellow, SPIE fellow, as well as scientists from first-class universities in Japan, United States, Hong Kong and other regions.
This project is focused on visual rehabilitation, a major livelihood demand of the blind and low vision group. The research team is dedicated to the development of revolutionary artificial retinal devices for neurological diseases. With the expertise of design and implementation of bionic microelectronic systems, we focus on the key technology development and industrialization of the next generation high resolution (126 pixels, 1024 pixels and above) artificial retina, aiming at vision restore of the blind.
The newly developed system will integrate novel biomaterials, new stimulation method, chip design with low power consumption and high efficiency, and high density tissue-device interface made by implantable/portable microelectronic devices. The ultimate goal is to find solutions to currently incurable human diseases such as blindness and other neurological diseases.
